The foundry mould maker is a skilled worker who makes molds for use in metalworking and other manufacturing industries. They create moulds for the casting process. The skilled mouldmaker of yesterday is a scarce commodity in today’s market. No longer it there a worker, who can “do it all.” Today, the mouldmaking shop is filled with specialists, who with the help of softwares design the mould and the mouldmaker is the person, who assembles the final mould. Much of the machining processes involved in mould making use computer-controlled equipment, CAD (Computer Aided Design) and is digitally transferred to CNC (Computer Numerical Control) for the actual manufacturing of the mould.
It is assumed that in the future, the 3D manufacturing technology will replace the traditional mould making industry. Nowadays, there are offers for 3D mould making on the market for some types of materials, which can change the number of workers required to produce the moulds.
